GGOG10 – Colbert’s Backhoe, Oculus’ Rift

Internet activists call to #CancelColbert over his “Ching Chong Ding Dong” skit lampooning the owner of the Washington Redskins, while Facebook buys Oculus Rift, sowing fury and despair through much of the gaming community. We discuss racism and the limits of satire, hashtag activism, and the sudden uncoolness of Facebook in the tenth episode of Gay Gods of Gaming! For our Happy Ending this week we reveal our favorite videogame weapons, and we even have a competition to win free games!

  2. I’m pretty behind on listening to you guys, so please forgive the late comment.

    The main problem with Colbert’s satire is that he’s punching down, rather than up. With the satire of the Chinese stereotype, he’s attacking a group of people who have historically been repeatedly attacked in the US.

    Colbert could have likewise made the same joke, but given that he claims Irish heritage he could have done some sort of parody of Irish, drunkness and potatoes. It would have been completely stupidly (and, to be frank, extremely annoying to see that shit yet *again* on American TV), but it would have had the advantage of punching up against a group that has been absorbed into the ‘white’ collective.
